Oil palm plantation and forest in Ucayali, Peru.
Shots were reportedly fired at members of a community and
indigenous peoples’ organisation investigating land invasions by an oil palm
company in Peru earlier this month.
Edinson Mahua, a representative of the indigenous
organisation FECONAU, was grazed by a bullet and suffered minor injuries in the
incident, which took place in the rainforest-rich region of Ucayali.
According to Forest Peoples Programme, the shots were fired
by an ‘enforcer’ associated with a company which has converted an area of
almost 7,000 hectares of forest into an oil palm plantation on community lands
without community consent.
